Here's a quick tip about how to try on
your marathon trainers to ensure they are an exact
fit:
If you are like most beginner marathoners, you will most likely have no
clue what your foot size
is when trying on new trainers.
If you select the wrong size trainer then you increase the chance of
developing an injury during
your marathon preparation. The reason for this is that your trainer
will either be too tight -
and therefore put extra stress on your foot muscles - or it will be too
loose.
If your training shoes are too loose, then your foot will slide every
time your heel strikes the
ground. This will put additional stress on all parts of your lower
body... especially your
achilles tendon and may lead to achilles tendonitis.
The best way to make sure you have a correctly fitted trainer is to try
on the trainers at the
end of the day. That way, your feet will be slightly swollen because
all the blood will
have drained to your feet during the day. This simulates what happens
during your training
sessions.
You should also make sure you are wearing the exact same socks that you
will be training in.
That way you will also be simulating the exact conditions you will be
facing during your
training sessions.
When you are ready to try different trainers, you should ideally have
half an inch between
the end of your longest toe and the end of the shoe and you should be
able to wiggle your toes
freely at the end of the shoe.
If you follow these simple principles then you should be giving
yourself the best chance to remain injury free during your marathon
preparation. You can find more tips on
