Most injuries occur when athletes increase their weekly training too
rapidly. This places strain and added stress on your muscles, tendons
and ligaments because they are not used to the impact of training so
many miles.
A simple rule here is the 10% rule - in that you should not increase
your training by more than 10% in any given week. The idea here is that
it gives your body the chance to recover from the additional stresses
as your weekly mileage increases.
